The world association FIFA increased the bonuses for the World Cup in the summer after criticism from Germany and other tournament participants. A total of 871 million US dollars (744 million euros) will be distributed to the 48 teams, as the FIFA Council decided at its meeting in Vancouver. FIFA had previously earmarked 727 million. The participants and thus also the German Football Association (DFB) can plan ahead with an entry fee of 10 million US dollars (previously 9 million) and 2.5 million dollars for preparation costs (previously 1.5 million).
FIFA justified the increase 44 days before the opening game with the commercial success of the tournament. FIFA is “proud to be in the most financially stable position in its history, which allows us to help all our member associations in an unprecedented way. This is another example of how FIFA’s resources are being reinvested in sport,” said President Gianni Infantino, according to a statement.

FIFA did not communicate any changes to the prize money after the meeting. The world association announced the record sum of 50 million US dollars for the new world champion after the council meeting in December.
The DFB had previously criticized the World Cup bonus regulations as inadequate. The entire pot was more full than ever before. However, 16 more teams will take part in the tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada from June 11th than in the last tournament in Qatar in 2022.

For most teams there would have been only slightly higher bonuses compared to the Qatar World Cup. The financial uncertainty is exacerbated by the fluctuating dollar exchange rate and the different taxation of profits in different US states. This is causing the DFB “really discomfort,” said managing director Andreas Rettig before the bonus increase.
