In the final phase of the Canada race, Lando Norris hunted his teammate-with fateful consequences. After that, he showed himself to be repentant.
A few laps before the end of the race in Canada, the team -internal duel escalated at McLaren: Lando Norris and Oscar Piatri fought fierce position four – in the end with a fatal outcome. The Briton collided with its teammate and had to park his car on the home stretch. Piatri still saved fourth place.
Norris, who not only cost his team important points in the constructor rating, but also lost many points in the fight for the driver crown on the overall leading Piatri, was already repentant immediately after the incident.
Already on the box radio from his damaged McLaren he said towards the team: “I’m sorry, that was all my mistake. It was stupid of me.” After the race, he even followed up again: “I can only blame myself. I apologize to the whole team and with Oscar that I tried something that was probably stupid,” he said. “It was just stupid of me. I go to sleep tonight, apologize to everyone and then it goes on.”
The incident occurred four rounds before the end of the race-at a moment when both McLaren drivers had at least hope for three podium. Instead of a strong team result, there was only damage limitation in the end.
Team boss Andreas Stella was disappointed: “We don’t want to see that both McLaren touch each other.” At the same time, he emphasized that the accident had happened without intention. “This happened because of an incorrect assessment of Lando.”
