After bankruptcy against Sandhausen: Hansa Rostock surprisingly put trainer Jens Härtel on leave

Second division soccer team FC Hansa Rostock has parted ways with head coach Jens Härtel with immediate effect two games before the end of the first half of the season. The club confirmed this on Sunday evening.

The 53-year-old was recently criticized for personnel decisions, on Friday Hansa lost the relegation duel against SV Sandhausen 0-1 and thus conceded the third home defeat without a goal of their own.

“We have had many discussions over the past few weeks and have come to the conclusion that after almost four years together, which were extremely intensive, we have now reached a point where it is time for changes and new impetus,” explained sports director Martin Pieckenhagen.

The successor should be clear today

Hansa is twelfth in the table after the 15th match day, but is only two points behind relegation place 17. Making the change in the coaching bench shortly before the end of the first half of the season leaves questions despite the difficult situation.

This week there are only two more games for the Rostockers before the long World Cup and winter break: Already on Wednesday (6.30 p.m., in the NDR Livecenter) the penultimate table 1. FC Nürnberg comes to the Ostseestadion, on Saturday (8.30 p.m ) the Mecklenburgers make a guest appearance at newly promoted Eintracht Braunschweig.

The club has not yet announced who will look after the team in the two games. Today there should be answers at the match day press conference (10 a.m.).

Hired on the “Kogge” in 2019

Haertel came to the then third division club FC Hansa in early 2019. In 2021 he led the team back to the second Bundesliga and safely managed to stay in the league the following season. Shortly before the end of the past season, he extended his contract in Rostock by a year until June 2023.

“I will have fond memories of the almost four years that I was allowed to be head coach of this club – especially the successes that we were able to achieve together during this time. I am grateful for the experience that I have gained,” said Härtel .

Pieckenhagen emphasized: “The separation from Jens is anything but easy for us because we value him both professionally and personally and the club owes him a lot.”
