After a lingering administrative crisis, Waalre has a new mayor

Marcel Oosterveer has been nominated as the new mayor of Waalre. The announcement was made at a city council meeting on Tuesday evening. Oosterveer was an alderman in Eindhoven for many years. He succeeds acting mayor Jan Boelhouwer, who was appointed to restore order after a governance crisis

The administrative crisis in 2020 had several causes, the acting mayor concluded after an investigation. His predecessor, Jan Brenninkmeijer, did not get along well with his municipal secretary. And things didn’t work out between the mayor and the aldermen either. But the reason for this has never been made clear.

With Marcel Oosterveer, Waalre has a new director. He was an entrepreneur and as a politician he was also active for many years as a member of parliament in Brabant and a councilor in Eindhoven. He was also party leader of the VVD. He then became alderman of finance in Eindhoven. In the last period of his aldermanship he was struck by an eye disease. That led to him becoming largely blind.

The search for the new mayor began in April. A preference was expressed for a woman. Eighteen candidates applied for the position, including five women.

Oosterveer succeeds Jan Boelhouwer, who was acting mayor in recent years. Boelhouwer succeeded Jan Brenninkmeijer, who previously resigned as mayor as a result of a governance crisis in Waalre.
