The total of Flemish subsidies increased by 600 million euros in 2024 to more than 18 billion euros. Health insurance funds, large cities and service check companies are the largest recipients among the more than 65,000 organizations and companies that received subsidies. Open VLD wants more control over those subsidies, and according to Professor Public Finance Herman Matthijs (VUB) that is urgently needed. “If you have ever received a subsidy in this country, you will continue to get it.”
