RIESA (dpa-AFX) – Almost three years after the start of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, there are still very different assessments in the AfD about how Germany feels about Russia and its president Vladimir Putin should position. A motion condemning the war, which violates international law, was not put to a vote during discussions on the program for the federal election. A majority of delegates spoke out against it at a party conference in Riesa, Saxony.

No condemnation of Putin

The amendment, which was supported by, among others, the outgoing Bundestag member Albrecht Glaser, states that Russia’s war violates the principles of self-determination of peoples and their equal rights. “The AfD therefore condemns President Putin’s behavior and once again calls on all warring parties to an immediate ceasefire and to hold peace talks,” say the applicants from northern Hesse.

The delegates also did not want to debate a motion that emphasized the importance of good relations with Russia, but at the same time rejected “the anti-German historical narratives raised from Russia.” The commission’s lead proposal for the AfD’s federal election program simply states: “The war in Ukraine has unhinged the European peace order.” Once again there are calls for the restoration of “undisturbed trade with Russia”./abc/DP/mis
