Udo Lindenberg was made an honorary citizen of the city of Hamburg last Wednesday (September 7th). Wrongly so, according to the Hamburg AfD. After the party publicly announced that the musician did not deserve the title, Lindenberg responded with a gesture that the AfD did not like at all.

AfD politician Alexander Wolf made a comparison between Lindenberg and the late soccer player Uwe Seeler (also called “Us Uwe”), who received honorary citizenship in 2003. “Compared to Us Uwe, Udo Lindenberg will not become Us Udo. An honorary citizen should have made a special contribution to Hamburg. That certainly applies to the Hotel Atlantic, but not necessarily to Hamburg,” says Wolf.

His speech in the town hall hall was followed by a number of boos – President Carola Veit had to ask those present to refrain from heckling. During the speech, Lindenberg was directly opposite the lectern – and he too reacted by silently imitating crank movements with his right hand and presenting his middle finger with his left.

The AfD demands an apology

Days later, the AfD sent the musician a letter in which the party demanded an apology for his alleged misconduct. In addition, Wolf is said to have hinted at an ad: “I’m appalled. For me, this gesture represents disrespect for Parliament and the elected representatives of the people. In traffic, that would be a condemnation. One should make even higher demands on an honorary citizen than on other citizens,” Wolf said in response to a query from t-Online.

According to the “Bild” newspaper, the president of the citizenship, Veit, said that she had not seen the gesture with her own eyes, but otherwise rebuked Lindenberg and “remembered the house rules”. She went on to say that Wolf’s speech bordered on a “personal insult.”

Many citizens found Lindenberg’s reaction appropriate. The Hamburg SPD parliamentary group leader Dirk Kienscherf also said that he could “fully understand” the gesture. Dennis Thering, head of the Hamburg CDU, speaks of a hypocritical act: “The constantly provocative AfD should not react overly sensitively again and constantly seek the role of victim,” says Thering.
