Aerodrome accident: Tesla runs into private jet in smart summon mode

Smart Summon function lets Teslas drive straight to the owner

Tesla collides with a private jet at the airport

Accident could cost Tesla owners dearly

Tesla’s Smart Summon feature

Since 2019, Tesla models have had the so-called Smart Summon function, i.e. a function for smart “summoning”. It is thus possible for Tesla drivers to summon their own car from a distance. When the function is activated, the car drives autonomously and carefully around possible obstacles and towards its owner. Nevertheless, Tesla warns on its own website that you should have a clear view of the vehicle during the entire process and that you should pay close attention to the surroundings. Above all, since it is still a BETA function, one should always be ready to intervene.

It is also important before use that all sensors and cameras are clean and that one pays attention to environmental conditions such as rain and faded lane markings, as these can impair the function. The company also warns, “The Smart Summon may not stop in front of all objects (especially very low objects, such as some curbs, or very tall objects, such as a shelf) and may not respond to all traffic. The Smart Summon does not recognize traffic direction, does not navigate around empty parking spaces and may not recognize crossing traffic.”

Crash at the airport

About a week ago, a situation arose in which the mostly practical Tesla function reached its limits. A user shared the video of a surveillance camera at an airport via the Reddit social media platform. The 16-second video shows a Tesla driving at low speed across the airport strip, going under the tail of a private jet and turning the plane sideways. “I was at a Cirrus event and someone tried to get their Tesla past a $3,500,000 Vision jet… Ooph…” explains the user who uploaded the video. As EFAHRER reports, the whole thing took place at Felts Field Airport in the US state of Washington. Apparently, the EV’s systems didn’t sense the very light jet, which has a wingspan of about 12 metres, which is probably due to the raised position of the tail.

Accident could be expensive for the Tesla owner

As the US electric car manufacturer states, each user is responsible for using the function appropriately. “It is the driver’s responsibility to use Smart Summon safely, responsibly and as intended.” The owner of the vehicle that caused the accident is now likely to face a substantial bill to pay for any damage to the aircraft. The plane, which EFAHRER says is a Cirrus Vision, will cost around $1.7 million to $2 million. It is unclear how the accident could have happened without anyone intervening. The Smart Summon feature requires the vehicle owner to keep pressing a button on the Tesla app at all times, otherwise the vehicle will stop automatically.
