Adventure in the sandbox: Van den Brom pulls Denny Landzaat away from ailing Willem II

A remarkable move by Denny Landzaat. Willem II’s assistant coach leaves the ailing Eredivisionist behind and leaves for Al-Taawon in Saudi Arabia. There, the 45-year-old Amsterdammer will be the right-hand man of John van den Brom, who was presented earlier this week. Heerhugowaarder Reinier Robbemond succeeds Landzaat at Willem II.

Last Friday, Al-Taawon announced that the former AZ coach will be working in the sandbox. Van den Brom, the longest serving trainer in Alkmaar club history, has been without a club since his resignation at KRC Genk. The Saudi Arabian club also immediately presented Denny Landzaat as a new assistant, which caused a lot of commotion in Tilburg.

The Saudi Arabian club itself released that news. Willem II, however, did not know anything about this yet, so that the Tilburgers were unpleasantly surprised. The Eredivisionist then reported that a departure of assistant Landzaat was ‘out of the question’. Willem II was therefore faced with an almost fait accompli.

Landzaat started this season at Willem II as assistant coach, but took over from Fred Grim, who was fired because of the disappointing results. The people from Brabant are currently in fifteenth place in the Eredivisie. He was the leader of the group against Fortuna Sittard, after which Kevin Hofland took office as the new coach of Willem II.

Landzaat and Van den Brom know each other from their AZ period. Van den Brom was head coach in Alkmaar from 2014 to 2019. At that time, Landzaat was involved in the youth academy with the Under 17 and Jong AZ. He was also an individual trainer for the first team. In 2019, Landzaat worked for three months in Saudi Arabia. Then he was an assistant under Henk ten Cate at Al-Ittihad for a year.
