Berlin’s most famous shopping street, the Kurfürstendamm, shines again this year during Advent and Christmas. The traditional lighting was switched on on Tuesday evening. Tens of thousands of lamps now shine on Tauentzienstrasse and Ku’damm.
About 140 kilometers of light chains with modern LED lamps, which consume comparatively little electricity, were hung in the trees along the kilometer-long route. There are also luminous sculptures and portals at the beginning of the shopping street near the Memorial Church, where the Christmas market also opened on Monday.
The lighting cost around 600,000 euros this year, according to AG City, the merger of shops on Ku’damm and the surrounding area. Half of this used to be paid by the Senate, and the other half was paid by businesses. Because the Senate is no longer paying anything, sponsors and donors were sought “so that the Kurfürstendamm will become a sparkling Christmas winter fairy tale again this year”.(dpa)
