Francesca van E. (34) does not have to go to prison for the explosion and fire in her house at the Langenhof in Oosterhout last year. The court in Breda ruled this on Tuesday. Van E. is less accountable and the court sees that the woman, who no longer wanted to live, mainly needs help.
Francesca does receive a suspended prison sentence of two years with an extra long probation period of three years from the court. And that suspended sentence is accompanied by a significant package of measures. Van E. must be treated for one to two years and will be strictly monitored for drug use. She will also receive 240 hours of community service.
The court hopes that the enormous explosion that Francesca caused during King’s Night last year has caused a turnaround in her life. The woman suffered from serious psychological problems and was addicted to drugs such as flakka, GHB and cannabis during that period.
By using flakka in particular, Van E. had ended up in a black hole. After getting into an argument with her boyfriend, she wrote him a farewell message and tried to take her own life. Francesca cut the gas hose in the kitchen and lay down on the couch. When she lit a cigarette, everything exploded and a big fire started.
The damage was enormous. The terraced house was completely burned out, the roof had collapsed and the entire neighborhood was evacuated due to explosion and fire danger.

E. was in a coma for six weeks and forty percent of her body was burned. She has been clean since the explosion, as became apparent during the hearing. She has realized that she needs help and she would like to accept that help to work on her disorders, the court sees.
Francesca now lives in Gelderland, far away from Oosterhout and Brabant, where she has such bad memories. She will soon move into her boyfriend’s new house and see her children again for the first time. “I never want to experience something like that again,” she told the judges during the hearing. “I want to be honest from now on and not use drugs anymore. I’m glad I’m still here.”
