Action committee continues to challenge new Silvamo landfill permit

Flemish minister Zuhal Demir gave the landfill a new permit for 25 years. But according to the action group, it opens the door to dumping soil contaminated with PFAS. They organize an information meeting for local residents.

Flemish minister Demir refused an extension, but the new permit does not include a ban on the supply of soil contaminated with PFAS, which an action group has already warned about.

Silvamo is allowed to dispose of dirty soil containing up to 50,000 micrograms of PFAS per kilogram of soil. The European standard would be only 3 micrograms of PFAS, which is 15,000 times lower.

The action group receives support from the social citizen movement Climaxi. The municipality of Kortemark first wants to thoroughly study Silvamo’s new permit, but previously stated that PFAS soil is not welcome.
