The Dinamo Sassari player leaves basketball after a tough battle against myeloid leukemia
“Thanks to the coaches, thanks to my teammates, to the medical staff of every team where I have been for making me feel like a good player but above all a man”, these are the words with which Achille Polonara decided to say goodbye to basketball. A forced farewell, which came after a very tough battle against myeloid leukemia which had struck him a few months ago, forcing him to have a marrow transplant and a long clinical ordeal. The last hopes of seeing him fly to the basket again have been extinguished in the last few days. After a delicate heart operation in February, the goal was a romantic return to the field for the second half of March with Dinamo Sassari. Polonara tried with all his strength, between individual sessions in Sassari and training in Campania, but reality proved to be harder than desires. “I tried, resuming individual training but I understand that it’s time to say enough to playing basketball because I will no longer be the player I was before and I want you to remember me for who I was!!”
