According to Zelensky, Ukraine faces a hellish dilemma: ‘Choose between losing dignity or support from ally US’

Ukrainian President Zelensky has spoken with NATO chief Mark Rutte about “the diplomatic options” to stop the war between Ukraine and Russia. He says in a message on X that he spoke to Rutte about the 28-point plan of his American counterpart Donald Trump. Zelensky stressed that he is ready to work “quickly, energetically and constructively” to make the plan a success.
Zelensky also spoke with US Vice President JD Vance on Friday about the US proposals. He said he still respects Trump’s desire to stop the bloodshed. According to Zelensky, Ukraine will work together with the US and Europe at the level of national security advisers on “a feasible path to peace”.
A few hours earlier, the president told the Ukrainians that they are facing a hellish dilemma. Ukraine would have to choose between losing its “dignity” and the support of crucial ally the US. Zelensky is working with European leaders on “alternatives” to difficult-to-digest parts of the peace plan.
Rutte previously mediated between Zelensky and Trump. He also coordinated European adjustment efforts when Trump turned his attention to Moscow. Rutte does not want to respond publicly to the American proposals for the time being.
According to these proposals, not only Ukraine, but also NATO would have to make concessions. So far, the alliance maintains that European countries are welcome as members. Many Member States attach great importance to this ‘open door policy’. And according to the alliance, Ukraine is even on an “irreversible path” to NATO membership, even though the US will not allow that to happen in the foreseeable future. But the peace plan requires Kiev and NATO to agree that Ukraine will never join.

Trump wants Ukraine to accept the framework for a peace deal by November 27. He called that “a very suitable date”. It is Thanksgiving, a national holiday in the US.
