For every 1,000 injury accidents, 159 people are killed or seriously injured on Easter Monday. “On other public holidays the average is 142 and on an annual basis it is 105. This means that accidents on Easter Monday are about 60 percent more serious than on an average day,” says Stef Willems of Vias institute.
According to Vias, this can be explained, among other things, by the calmer traffic, which makes drivers drive faster. In addition, Easter Monday is a day with many family visits. “More people are moving around, also by bicycle or motorbike, especially now that the weather is improving,” he said.
