The filling of the coaching position at Milan has been clarified: the Portuguese Rúben Amorim is taking over. A former Bundesliga coach comes away empty-handed.

The traditional Italian club AC Milan has ended its week-long search for a coach. As the “Rossoneri” announced on Tuesday, Rúben Amorim will succeed Massimiliano Allegri, who was dismissed in May. The Portuguese beat, among others, former Bundesliga coach Oliver Glasner (Eintracht Frankfurt and VfL Wolfsburg), who had also been traded to the Serie A club. According to reports, Amorim signed a contract until 2028 – with an option for a further year – five months after his expulsion from Manchester United.

“There are goals that stay with you throughout your career and becoming coach of AC Milan has always been one of my goals,” said Amorim. “I know exactly what this club means: history, prestige and an exceptional fan base around the world. It is a challenge that I accept with pride and enthusiasm, knowing full well what these colors stand for.”

Milan had recently missed the Champions League, ended up in fifth place in the league and thus missed out on a place in the Champions League. Amorim should lead the club back on the road to success. It is still unclear who he will work with – the club had previously dismissed its entire sporting leadership.

Before moving to England, Amorim had become one of the most sought-after coaches in Europe. At Sporting Lisbon he ended a 19-year wait for the championship title in 2021 and confirmed success in 2024. He then inherited Erik ten Hag at Man United. With 15th place, he was responsible for the Red Devils’ worst final finish since 1974. His points average of 1.43 is the lowest by a team manager at United in the past 50 years.
