Aaronson moves to Leeds United – Among Salzburg’s most expensive departures

Philadelphia Union benefits

Leeds United have confirmed an agreement to transfer Brenden Aaronson from Red Bull Salzburg. The 21-year-old midfielder has signed a contract with the Premier League club until 2027. The transfer fee is around 28 million euros, making him one of the five most expensive departures in Salzburg’s history. It’s also the second-highest amount ever spent on a US international. Only Christian Pulisic (23), who switched from BVB to Chelsea in 2019 for 64 million euros, was even more expensive.

Aaronson’s former club Philadelphia Union will also benefit from the transfer. Noisy “MLSSoccer.comThe Union receives 10 to 20 percent of the transfer fee. As Jonathan Tannewald of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported, the total amounts to US$ 5 million (€4.6 million). Added to the transfer fee of 5.4 million euros paid by Salzburg in January, the right foot becomes the fourth most expensive departure in the history of the MLS, on a par with Alphonso Davies (overview). As a result of the transfer, Aaronson is among the winners in the Austrian Bundesliga’s market value update, which is due out on Friday.

Red Bull Salzburg’s Aaronson is also among the most expensive transfers at Leeds United

At Leeds, Aaronson, who recorded six goals and ten assists in 41 games in all competitions for Salzburg last season, is also among the three most expensive transfers. Only Rodrigo (of Valencia) and Daniel James (of Manchester United) cost more. At the “Peacocks”, in which the ownership group of NFL team San Francisco 49ers holds a significant stake, Aaronson will once again meet former Salzburg head coach Jesse Marsch. The US coach took over the club in the spring and led it to stay up on the last day of the game.
