After the issue of a new report, the municipality of Aa and Hunze decides once again to be against the storage of nuclear waste or hydrogen in salt dome. In the report ‘National agenda underground hydrogen storage’, different locations are mentioned in which that storage would be possible. Three of them are in the municipality of Aa and Hunze.
At the end of last week, the report on the storage of hydrogen in, among other things, salt domes were presented. It states that the salt domes are technically suitable for the storage of hydrogen, but that the feasibility is limited. This is because then salt must first be extracted and then all kinds of measures are needed to make storage possible.
Mayor Anno Wietze Hiemstra of AA and Hunze is not happy with the report. “The chance that it will eventually come to that seems small, but it is not excluded. We now want to make it clear again: no rumbling in the soil. That is and remains our starting point and we also find that attitude with many residents and associations of Dorpsbelangen.”
The mayor also criticizes the moment of publication of the report. “It is difficult to talk about this just now in the summer period.” The storage of waste in salt umbrella organizations will be discussed in the Lower House in October. The municipality of Aa and Hunze wants to come to The Hague with a response before that time.
The salt domes in the municipality of Aa and Hunze are in Gasselte, Anloo and Schoonloo. They were also mentioned as a location for the storage of nuclear waste. “That proposal is still not off the table,” says Hiemstra. “Now this is added. It gives the impression that there is little direction and coordination from the government.”
