The Finns have once again reached a global milestone in greenhouse cultivation, says the release of the Commercial Garden Association.

For years, the world’s largest square harvests of cucumbers have been collected in Finland. Now let’s break records again.

During the last farming season, a farmer from South Pohja Johan Prinsén produced 256 kilograms of cucumber per square meter per year. The previous record, 244 kilos from 2024, was also held by Oy Johan Prinsén Ab. The old record was improved by about five percent.

– Finland has the best cucumber growers in the world. Such harvests can be achieved when the cultivation method and technical development are optimized to their peak, says the executive director of the Finnish Garden Association Niina Kangas in the bulletin.

Kangas clarifies that a high square footage means that the resources used for farming, such as energy, water, growing media and fertilizers, are used as well as possible and production is on a sustainable basis.

According to him, with the intensification of cultivation, the carbon footprint of Finnish greenhouse cultivation has decreased and greenhouse cultivation is a reasonable way to produce fresh vegetables all year round in Finland.

In 2024, the average yield in Finland was 114 kilograms per one square meter of greenhouse.

– The amounts are huge compared to, for example, cucumber production in Spain, which is only about 10 kilograms per square meter. Therefore, one square meter yields more than 10 times more cucumbers in Finland than in Spain, Kangas states in the press release.
