Luxury house Chanel is celebrating its perfume segment with an exhibition at the Grand Palais Ephémère, a temporary building on the Champ-de-Mars in Paris. Between huge bottles and playful experiments, the brand majestically unfolds its universe.
Chanel wants to tell the story of its perfumes
The Parisian company is a major player in the perfume market and created one of the best-selling perfumes in the world, N°5 de Chanel, in the 1920s. But the range of fragrances has now grown much larger and brought Chanel sales of 15.6 billion dollars (around 14.6 billion euros) in 2021. And it is precisely their story that the luxury house wants to unfold in an immersive and multi-sensory exhibition in Paris.
The exhibition, titled “Le Grand numéro” (The Big Number), runs from December 15 to January 9, 2023, a period when the capital attracts many tourists. To better appeal to this audience, the brand has opted for an “emotional journey,” according to Thomas du Pré de Saint Maur, head of global creative resources for perfumery and beauty, jewelry and watches at Chanel, in a press release.
Visitors first discover a large square with a tent-like circular space where the world of Chanel perfumery is brought to life through giant bottles and other XXL elements.
The playful course of the exhibition invites you to spin a wheel of fortune, find clues to get to a secret bar, take the Rorschach test in olfactory form or slip into the skin of Ernest Beaux, the perfumer who Gabrielle Chanel collaborated on the creation of No 5. All of these experiences are intended to help make the brand’s perfumes better known.
The company recently made headlines when it hosted its AW22/23 Métier d’Art fashion show in Dakar, Senegal in early December. Subsequently, Chanel announced that it would set up the first international program of the 19M in the same city. The 19M is a center that will be inaugurated in Paris in 2021 and aims to preserve and develop various handicrafts.
