A touch of the Olympics: This is how the European Championships run in Munich

Status: 09.08.2022 11:06 a.m

Countdown to the biggest sporting event in Germany since the 2006 World Cup: Munich is ready for the European Championships. Nine European Championships in nine Olympic sports – and that exactly 50 years after the Summer Games.

177 medal decisions, around 4,700 athletes – from August 11th to 21st, Munich will be the heart of European sport. The European Championships are all about European Championship medals in nine Olympic disciplines.

The multisport event is only taking place for the second time. It premiered four years ago in Glasgow and Berlin. With Munich, a single city is hosting all competitions for the first time. And the Bavarian state capital is fully relying on the flair of the 1972 Olympics: the competition venues that were built for the summer games 50 years ago are experiencing a grandiose comeback.

sports and competition venues

The heart of the European Championships beats in the Munich Olympic Park. Medals in athletics are awarded in the Olympic Stadium. Artistic gymnastics takes place in the Olympic Hall, while table tennis medals are at stake in the Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle, where basketball was played at the 1972 Olympics and where FC Bayern basketball players usually twirl across the floor.

Olympic Park, Olympic Lake, Olympic Mountain

Triathletes use the Olympic Park and Olympic Lake for their competitions. New and exciting: For the first time, the Olympiaberg will also be the venue for competitions. Mountain bike cross-country and BMX freestyle are at home here.

Rowing and canoeing on the Olympic regatta course

In Oberschleißheim in the north of Munich, it’s all about European Championship medals in rowing and canoeing. The Olympic regatta course, which has been a listed building since 2018 and is a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts, is the venue for a major international sporting event for the first time since the 2007 Rowing World Championships.

Munich’s city center is becoming a sports temple

A highlight of the European Championships will also be the competitions in beach volleyball and climbing. These take place at the centrally located Königsplatz, a square in the style of European classicism.

The marathon and walking routes also lead right through the center of Munich.

Cyclists in the Munich area

Track cyclists determine their new European champions at the exhibition center in the east of Munich. The street competitions start in the Munich area in Murnau and Fürstenfeldbruck and lead to the city centre.
