A technical scandal at the Nokia Arena during the World Cup final of the Lions

The network connection problems have been resolved, assures the general secretary of the Tampere World Championships Heikki Hietanen.

The Nokia Arena, which cost approximately EUR 120 million, experienced a major problem during the final match of the World Hockey Championships in May 2022, when the arena’s network connections went down.

The problem started during the third period, when Finland and Canada were playing for the gold medal. First the media network crashed, then the public network and finally the mobile networks were so blocked that data could not move.

In the arena, the media was offered a backup network of the media network, but that didn’t work either. The backup network of the backup network worked for a while until it too crashed.

The problem was scandalous for the hundreds of media representatives who worked at the games.

It was immediately suspected in Tampere that the network had been sabotaged.

– The matter has been investigated so that this kind of thing cannot happen again. It is not known that it was a hacker attack. That was feared for the whole Games, but nothing like this happened, says the CEO of the city of Tampere Juha Yli-Rajala.

Acting as general secretary of the World Championships in Tampere Heikki Hietanen says that the network problem that occurred at the time of the World Cup final 2022 was technical.

– We have analyzed the problem. It is not possible to happen next year. There were two issues at the very end, but they have now been resolved, Hietanen states.

The backup network’s backup network started working after the medal ceremonies of the final match.

Partly due to a network problem, Iltalehti was the only Finnish media that got the Finnish players and head coach in the paper the day after the final Jukka Jalonen fresh comments.

The stories were forwarded after the final with Iltalehti’s cameraman’s “mockula connection”.

The World Ice Hockey Championships will be played in Tampere and Riga, Latvia from 12 to 28. May 2023. Finland will naturally play in Tampere. The semi-finals and medal games of the games are also held at the Nokia Arena.
