A sewage leak forces the CAP Gòtic in Barcelona to be temporarily closed

The Barcelona neighborhood has been calling for a new Primary Care Center for 12 years

The Gòtic Primary Care Center has had to close temporarily due to a sewage leak in the building. As reported by the Catalan Institute of Health (ICS) this Monday, it is expected that the usual care activity can be recovered in the coming days.

The origin of the breakdown is found in the homes managed by the Catalan Housing Agency, located on the upper floors of the same block in which the CAP is located. According to the ICS statement, the leak in the wastewater collection system has caused leaks in the health center, forcing it to be temporarily closed.

While the issue is resolved, some outpatient services have been derived to an external module located in front of the CAP, in Plaça Joaquim Xirau. Others have had to move to an additional space that the CAP has on the ground floor of the APROP building, on Nou de Sant Francesc street.

neighborhood claim

The construction of a new CAP in the Gothic quarter is a neighborhood demand that dates back to 2008. Although the current clinic was opened in the year 2000, from the beginning it has had infrastructure problems, with multiple episodes of leaks of sewage like the one that happened today.

The Platform CAP Gòtic Nou Ja!made up of neighborhood residents and downtown workers, has once again denounced the precarious situation in which the CAP finds itself through social networks. “It is unbelievable and intolerable that we have to wait in these conditions until 2028 to have a new CAP”.

Apart from remembering the delay of the City Council in the deadlines to get the new center, CAP Gòtic Nou Ja! He has stated that Salut promised to carry out the necessary interventions to solve the problem in a meeting he held in January with the platform “to be able to work and attend in minimum conditions until 2028”.

For its part, the Catalan Institute of Health has demanded that the Barcelona’s town hall that “as has been publicly committed provide the necessary spaces for the construction of a new CAP”. “Professionals and citizens cannot accept more non-compliances that are endangering the right to health”, the statement states.
