HPK head coach Matias “Maso” Lehtonen opened his verbal coffin after the Kärpät–HPK match on Wednesday.

HPK lost the game 0–1.

– I’m proud of those guys, even though the second referee came to announce how bad a hockey team we are and how badly we play. We don’t necessarily need to tell ourselves that, Lehtonen unexpectedly claimed at the press conference.

– The young guys are trying to do it. It would be nice if, even if the boxes are going the way they are going, you could be humble towards all people, he continued.

Lehtonen did not specify his accusation. Acting as the main referees of the match Jukka-Pekka Koistinen and Antti Boman.

The league’s referee director Jyri Rönn told Iltalehte that he was investigating the course of events.

One goal

Lehtonen commented on the game by saying that Kärpät deserved the victory. However, HPK kept Kärpä on its toes.

– We were able to keep the readings tight, which means we were on the verge of victory or within a point. We defended the center with commitment. Every guy gave it his all and played as well as he could.

He scored the only goal of the match Teemu Turunen at the beginning of the second period. HPK is currently 14th in the SM league, Kärpät fifth.
