A promise is a debt: Joël Drommel PSV goalkeeper in the cup final against Ajax

Although first goalkeeper Walter Benitez has secured many points for PSV this season, trainer Ruud van Nistelrooij sticks to his promise that Joël Drommel will be in goal during cup matches. So also in the final against Ajax on Sunday. And despite last weekend’s 3-0 against the team from Amsterdam with Benitez as keeper.

Van Nistelrooij promised Drommel the cup final before the season and he still has no regrets. After there was a lot of criticism of Drommel’s performances last year, he became second goalkeeper behind Benitez this season.

“The difference with Walter is not that big”

The Argentinian turns out to be a bull’s eye for PSV and takes many points for the Eindhoven club. Nevertheless, the decision remains that Drommel will be in the goal for the cup final on Sunday. “You want to keep giving Joël the chances,” Van Nistelrooij began his explanation. “We see him as a potential goalkeeper for PSV and the difference with Walter is not big.”

Drommel already had to replace Benitez once this season. “He did an excellent job at that time. He has shown in those matches that he is a reliable goalkeeper. We are also in the final thanks to him. I have no doubts about Sunday.”

“There is no doubt with Joël either”

Captain Luuk de Jong also trusts his goalkeeper. “When I talk to him, Joël has no doubts whatsoever. He’s good at it. He also did an excellent job during the period in which he had to replace Walter.”

So no doubts about Drommel heading for Sunday. There are also few doubts in the selection. Van Nistelrooij can rely on an almost fit selection.

Mauro Júnior and Armando Obispo have been out for a long time. Only Ismael Saibari has been added, but that is not a basic player.
