A prize for the courageous people of Ukraine

By Miriam Krekel

Since February 24, 2022, our world is not what it was before. On this Thursday in winter, Russian President Vladimir Putin attacked Ukraine with tanks. A war began that took place far beyond the borders of the two countries. But was it really the beginning?

In reality, the war started much earlier. Today it moves the whole world, sooner or later there will be no country that will not be affected. The effects of the shift in the energy market and on the agricultural economy are already devastating.

Human tragedies also play out far beyond the borders. The Berliners in particular, with their impressive personal commitment, see this every day. So many people in our city have taken in people in need or helped them in other ways.

Some foresaw the drama, many have warned about Putin before. The winner of this year’s BZ Culture Prize, Maryna Er Gorbach, did more. She made a film about the tragedy in Donbass in 2014 – where the war actually began. And where he rages worst again today.

It shows once again how important culture is, how much it conveys something that news reports describe in a completely different way.

We are particularly proud that Maryna Er Gorbach will personally receive the award at Kino International. It is a prize for them and also representative of the courageous Ukrainians, especially the cultural workers among them, who do not give up despite the most difficult circumstances.

Because they have a job. Far beyond the life and borders of their country.
