A party, but no double-muscled cows on alternative Easter cattle: “We are a bit unlucky”

For the third time in a row, the cows remain in the barn during Easter cattle in Schagen. Despite that, Schagen is having a party today. Under a different, temporary name: ‘Schagen Celebrates Spring’.

It was impossible for the organization to make a decision during the then uncertain corona time and to realize the event in a short time. “It could have been, but it is now too late,” says chairman Willem Keesom regretfully. It is a big disappointment for the organization, which has had to cancel the event three times before. “We are a bit unlucky,” says Keesom.

Still a party

Although it soon became clear that the Easter cattle exhibition was canceled again, several catering owners decided to organize an alternative Easter cattle in the short term. That was not easy, because approval still had to be obtained from the municipality and sufficient security had to be arranged. “But we are very happy that we can and do organize something,” says Piet Hein de Boer, chairman of Stichting Evenementen Schagen.

“I thoroughly enjoy it”

In order to guarantee safety, it became mandatory this year to buy an entrance bracelet in advance. Also, all partygoers must remain in the specially cordoned off zone and alcohol is not allowed outside. But that doesn’t stop the visitors from having a nice party again. “I’ve only just got there, but I think it’s going to be pretty fun,” says one partygoer. Another visitor agrees: “I’m running into people I last saw three years ago, so I’m enjoying myself again.”

It remains a gloomy day for Willem and his association, but despite that, he also wishes the catering industry to realize this party after all. The cow farmer hopes that the market in Schagen will be full of double-muscled cows again next year. “We hope to be able to continue the tradition for many years to come.”
