A herd of bison died under the ice in Belovezhskaya Pushcha – RBC

In the Belarusian National Park “Belovezhskaya Pushcha” a herd of bison fell through the ice, 21 individuals died. About it says on the website of the Ministry of Nature of Belarus.

“According to preliminary data, bison were part of a herd of at least 100 individuals, some of which died while overcoming a water barrier on ice,” the report says.

The incident took place in the Svislovchsky district of the Grodno region of the country, near the village of Bolshie Masushiny. The bodies of 21 animals were found in a pond on the Medyanka River, they were removed from the water. At the same time, the body of a dead underyearling, a bison, aged 10-11 years, was found on the river bank. In “Belovezhskaya Pushcha” they suggested that wolves had bitten him.

The authorities organized a commission, which included employees of the local department for emergency situations, the inspection of natural resources and environmental protection, the veterinary service and the scientific department, as well as the department of bison science and the veterinary service of the national park.
