Rayo Vallecano does not stop growing in this first third of the competition and they are already three points behind Europe
The victory of the weekend against Sevilla confirms the good work of the people of Madrid
The Vallecano Ray continues to grow and no longer leaves anyone indifferent. Andoni Iraola’s team added, after the victory at the Sánchez Pizjuán over Sevilla (0-1), four games without losing. And of those games, in addition to the triumph at the Sevilla fiefdom, Vallecas’ men also scored points in their visit to Atlético de Madrid with a 1-1 win at the Metropolitano.
The next rival to test the growth of Iraola’s team is the league leader. The Real Madrid will visit the Vallecas Football Field next Monday, on the penultimate day before the World Cup break. At home, the rayistas have won three of their five games (a remarkable 2-1 over Valencia or the blunt 5-1 to Cadiz, for instance). Of the other two, one was a draw and the only defeat dates from the third day (0-2 vs Mallorca). The good feelings of Andoni Iraola’s team translate into a respectable ninth position. The Vallecanos, with 18 points, are closer to Europe than relegation: They are three units behind Athletic, sixth classified, and eight above Sevilla, which occupies the third place that condemns them to lose the category.
Rayo will seek to make Vallecas respect against Real Madrid. Last season, when the team returned to the top flight, Ancellotti’s men struggled to get the three points with a tight 0-1. As for the game at the Bernabéu, the European champions also had to work harder to win 2-1. Next Monday, Iraola hopes to make things difficult for Madrid again and score points to climb more positions in the table. “We are not afraid of anyone. We are a team that adapts. If we have to have the ball we have it and if not, no. We can play against or with possession and that becomes complicated for the rivals. We are strong and we are going to be very strong to win the next day“said Santi Comesaña, one of the team captains, after the weekend’s win in Seville.
