A full electricity grid makes the establishment of new companies on Riegmeer in Hoogeveen uncertain

The municipality of Hoogeveen wants to develop the Riegmeer business park, but will have to deal with an overloaded electricity grid in the coming years. As a result, new large-scale consumers cannot be connected.

The council writes this in a letter to the city council. It will take years before the capacity on the electricity grid can be expanded. The construction of a so-called substation is expected to start in 2025 or 2026 at the earliest.

Despite the fact that new companies (large consumers from 100,000 kWh) cannot be connected to the electricity network, the municipality of Hoogeveen will continue to sell plots on Riegmeer. According to the Board, new companies can already register, ‘so that this step in the process has already been completed’.

Spicy letter

The provincial executive of Drenthe sent a tough letter to the minister at the end of last year, in which they are concerned about the consequences for newcomers and existing companies in this province that want to expand. ‘This bad news comes on top of the existing supply congestion of solar and wind energy projects in Drenthe’, write GS.

According to the municipality, the capacity shortage in Hoogeveen has no effect on the location of the FAGE dairy factory. ‘This connection with the required capacity has been requested and confirmed in good time’, write B and W to the council.

Construction of roundabouts

No environmental permit has yet been issued for the arrival of this producer of Greek yoghurt. This is expected in the short term, the municipality estimates. Because FAGE may start construction in the autumn, Hoogeveen wants to start preparing the area for construction and the construction of two roundabouts in the Hollandschedijk.
