A soccer fan died in Mexico City’s Estadio Banorte arena on Saturday evening, according to the district prosecutor’s office on message service X.
According to the authorities, the fan was intoxicated. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the fan fell from the VIP fence into the arena parking lot while trying to jump between the tiers of the stand. The prosecutor will continue the investigation of the case and find out, among other things, the security arrangements for the event.
The accident happened before the start of a friendly match between Mexico and Portugal. The match was played normally despite the accident. The game ended in a tie 0–0.
The World Cup football matches will be held in the same arena in June. Mexico is co-hosting the World Cup together with the United States and Canada. The World Championships will be held from 11 June to 19 July.
