The cabinet wants the European Union (EU) to make sharp choices in the new European multi -year budget. The Netherlands therefore argues for a modern and future-oriented EU budget that contributes to the strengthening of European competitiveness, a sturdy migration and asylum policy, and safety and defense. These priorities meet the most important challenges that the Netherlands and the EU stand for. Minister Veldkamp of Foreign Affairs and Minister Heinen of Finance in a letter to the House of Representatives write this.
The current European multi -year budget will expire in 2028. The Member States of the EU will therefore re -agree for a period of at least five years in the following so -called European Multi -year Financial Framework (MFK) what the EU will spend money on. The European Commission is expected to present a proposal for this in July 2025. In the letter to the House of Representatives, the cabinet explains the Dutch commitment to the negotiations about the next MFK.
With sharp choices, the cabinet wants to ensure a modern and future -oriented European multi -year budget – and a stronger position of the EU on the world stage. In addition, the government wants the EU to be better able to respond to unforeseen circumstances. The government also emphasizes that European resources must be used effectively and transparently, with a strong focus on complying with the rule of law. In addition, the starting point is that the Dutch payments to the EU do not rise further than is now included in the budget, as agreed in the Outline Agreement. The government is of the opinion that this will remain possible an ambitious European policy, even without the rise in payments.
Negotiations on the MFK start after the presentation of the proposals of the European Commission. They will be high on the European agenda in the coming years and are expected to last at least two years.
