Last week the subquota for specializations were tightened, so that more students will flow to general practitioner medicine. The measure must reduce the general practitioner deficit and starts at the start of the Academic Year 2028-2029.
However, Warnez pointed out that many students stay in the student city after they get their diploma. In cities such as Ghent, the number of doctors rose by 17 percent in five years, while Veurne had an equally large decrease. “Students often hang where they did an internship,” said Warnez. “And let that be just the regions where there are enough doctors.”
