The tower of the Witterbrug in Assen will be completely demolished in the coming weeks. This is necessary so that the bridge can be repaired and therefore can open and close again this summer.
Motorists and motorcyclists cannot therefore use the bridge over the canal from 31 March, just like shipping.
After Sinterklaas arrived in Assen in November, the bridge did not want to go down for five days. The ballast had been stuck. “Research has shown that an important component is defective and cannot be replaced on the spot. This makes a major repair necessary, whereby the tower of the bridge is completely dismantled and the defective part is restored elsewhere,” the municipality of Assen reports.
Monday afternoon, March 31 and Tuesday April 1, the bridge is therefore closed for all traffic. In the more than two weeks later, only pedestrians and cyclists can use it. The municipality of Assen sets a diversion for the rest of the traffic.
