Cycling superstar Jonas Vingegaard has recently fallen in the classic Paris-Nizza, whereupon he later had to cancel the tour prematurely and even cancel a succession. The injury turned out to be quite serious than initially assumed.
Jonas Vingegaard not only carried away wounds, bruises on his hand and a bloody lip when he had fallen in the fifth stage at Paris-Nice. The two-time Tour-de-France winner also spoke to “BT” of a “concussion”, which had come up with a longer break than originally hoped for.
The Dane added: “I am glad that I was able to sit on my bike again last Thursday, even if it took a little longer because of my concussion. I had to rest a lot.”
Bitter: Vingegaard also missed the Catalonia Tour due to the injury – an important cornerstone in preparing for the major events this year. When he can get back into training again is also open. “We see from day to day how rehabilitation is going and whether we have to make adjustments to my program,” said the 28-year-old.
Vingegaard had “a lot of blood on his face”
According to Grischa Niermann, sporting director of Visma – Lease A Bike, Vingegaard fell out of the stand at the France classic at a mountainous section.
Team colleague Matteo Jorgenson then reported that he “saw the Danes on the edge of the route with a lot of blood on the face”. Vingegaard was able to continue the race after a check at the race doctor and a change of bike, although he complained about pain.
“He later came to me and said that his hand hurts very much and that he has problems braking and keeping his handlebar properly,” said the American.
Jonas Vingegaard’s big goal is to win the Tour de France in July, defending champion is the top favorite Tadej Pogacar.
