“We have not received any signals that the organizing club has not complied with the rules.” This says a spokesperson for the Royal Dutch Motorcyclists Association, the KNMV. He responds to the fatal accident that happened on Sunday afternoon during the club matches of MCC Biest-Houtakker. A motorcyclist of 25 died in a fall. The victim had jumped over a hill with his motorcycle and then bumped into a tree.
According to the KNMV spokesperson, it is much too early to be over the cause of the accident and about whether the association has taken sufficient security measures: “The investigation is carried out by the police and we will have to wait for that. Our first care now goes out to support the club’s board and other stakeholders.”
No cushions?
Unlike last year, trees along the course would not have been fitted with cushions that could mitigate a blow. The KNMV victim could not comment on this, but as far as we know the rules were complied with, he said. “And otherwise such competitions may not continue.” The club itself did not want to comment on Sunday afternoon.
The competitions were accessible to members of the KNMV and the Motor Organisatienederland (MON). The spokesperson for this second organization said that she knows no more than what Omroep Brabant has already reported. It is possible that the Federal Office can provide more information later in the week.
Red flag
The accident happened around ten over half-three during the annual open club matches of MCC Biest-Houtakker on the circuit on the Reyweg. The competitions were visited by many people, partly due to the sunny spring weather.
After the report of the fatal crash, several police cars, ambulances and a trauma helicopter were called in. First aiders have tried to resuscitate the victim in vain. Immediately after the fall, the red flag was waved and the program stopped. After that the program no longer resumed. The matches, which had started around half past two, would have lasted until about five hours on Sunday afternoon.
At the end of the afternoon, the police took the engine of the victim and his helmet for further investigation.
