Werder Bremen’s footballers compete in front of 57,000 spectators in the DFB Cup semi-final. The northern derby against HSV breaks all records in German women’s football.
In Hamburg Football history is written on Sunday. Werder Bremen’s women’s team competes against the record set of 57,000 spectators in the DFB Cup semi-final against Hamburger SV.
Never before has a club game in German women’s football attracted so many fans to the stadium. The previous record of 44,808 spectators at the DFB Cup final 2024 in Cologne will be clearly exceeded.
Of course, the women from Hamburg and Bremen also fill a gap with their record game that the men have been leaving for years: The last time HSV against Werder was there in the 2021/22 season in the second division. The last semi-final duel in the DFB Cup was even 16 years ago.
“It means a lot to me abnormally,” says Werder striker Larissa Mühlhaus before the game in the Volksparkstadion. Playing here was always a dream of her. The native of Hamburg only moved from HSV to Bremen before this season. The women want to show on Sunday that this rivalry can be lived out even without hatred and large safety precautions that the men’s derbies always surround. “I think it doesn’t play so big in women’s football. It’s a bit more familiar,” said Werder player Larissa Mühlhaus.
The winner of the Nordderby meets FC Bayern Munich in the final or TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. A winner of this record game in Hamburg is already certain from the outset: women’s football itself is itself.
