There will not be a new educational and culture accommodation in the field of Nassauvincent in Gieten for the time being. The municipality of Aa and Hunze makes a pass in place, because the expected number of pupils is higher than was thought in the future.

In the original plans for the new cultural center, the municipality assumed a growth to 240 students at the Nassauvincent. At that time there were already signals that this number would be higher, when 300 students were thought of. A new student prognosis has therefore been drawn up, in which it is expected that the Nassauvincent in Gieten will have structurally 380 students in Gieten in the next 15 years.

“This has direct consequences for the new educational and culture accommodation, because it would come to the location of the school,” the municipality said. That is why the municipality is now taking the time to see where the accommodation can be. “In the coming period, the consequences of the new student prognosis will be analyzed and different scenarios will be worked out.”

In the new Cultuurhuis, which has to come to the site of an old school building, there would be room for education and culture. The plan was that lessons are given during the day, in the evening cultural associations can rehearse. The Cultuurhuis had to be ready in the first instance in 2026, whether it will succeed is not clear.

Several cultural associations in Gieten say they are disappointed in the decision of the municipality. “We have been working on this for years and then the weather is not going on. While such a cultural center is very much needed as shelter for associations and for choirs and theaters to do performances.”

Local residents were already critical of the municipality about the arrival of the cultural center on the school grounds. They feared noise, parking and traffic nuisance, in particular around performances. Nevertheless, a majority of the municipality of Aa and Hunze agreed last year with the construction of the Cultuurhuis at this location.
