By one of Simenon’s masterpieces, Belle’s death (published by Adelphi), Benoît Jacquot took a film that does not disfigure in front of the literary original. The habitual life of Pierre, professor of mathematics in high school, and of his wife Cléa, owner of an optical shop, is turned upside down when The teenage girl who host Belle in the house is found dead and naked in her room.
Cléa was at an evening with friends while Pierre had remained at home to correct school homework: he is inevitable that he is the first suspect. It is inevitable that the public opinion of the provincial town in which they live think guilty.
Guillaume Canet and Charlotte Gainsbourg in the movie “The Belle Steiner case”
Recording the strangely fatalistic behavior of Pierre, who declares himself innocent but does not seem to worry much about showing himthe film digs into the growing anguish of this man who gives the impression of wanting to hide something with his silences.
The novel (absolutely to be read) had a dark and desperate ending, but the film (absolutely to see) is no lesson the very thin and very fragile thread that divides innocence from guilt.
For those who love atmosphere yellows.
