Van den Berg says that there is a lot of surprise in the municipality about how the demonstrators are handled. “If you and I now climb over the fence of Schiphol, we go into the bowl, but these activists are just about the runway and then a village further down the police bus are turned off again. We really have to see how we can prevent that kind of scenarios in the future.”
Other parties in the city council feel little for a ban. Sicco Jan Bier (D66) understands the worries about vandalism, but would rather not ‘not take the right to demonstrate’. “Damage is of course cross -border, but I would not immediately call it stopping people in Primark.”
Little trust other parties
“This is a very strong call from the VVD,” says CDA party leader Erik van der Peet. “I think the reference to terrorism is going too far. There are limits to activism, but forbidding an organization is a very far -reaching measure. I don’t see it happening.”
A spokesperson for the municipality can say little to NH about the VVD proposal, because the mayor first wants to answer Van den Berg’s questions. “But the mayor is always in consultation with parties such as the Public Prosecution Service about what can be done. The possibility of a ban has not yet been discussed in those conversations at the moment.”
