Finally, Mats Hummels at AS Rome went uphill again. In the Europa League, however, he weakened his team.

Used evening for Mats Hummels: After only eleven minutes, the central defender of the AS Rome saw the red card in the round of 16 of the Europa League against Athletic Bilbao. After a bad pass at the center line in the game structure, Hummels scored the ball at 0-0 as the last man, but above all athletic striker Maroan Sannadi.

Referee Clément Turpin immediately decided on red, and the video evidence (VAR) also had no objection. Hummels couldn’t believe it, wagged his hands back and forth. With coach Claudio Ranieri there was a short handshake, then the 36-year-old disappeared into the catacombs. The Roma won the first leg 2-1.

For Hummels, who had recently played back in Ranieri in Rome, it was the first dismissal in the Roma jersey. The last time he flew off the square as a player of Borussia Dortmund in December 2023 – also because of an emergency brake. It is open whether the 2014 world champion will extend his contract in Rome that expires in the summer.
