In the past, participants in the marathon always walked a lot of the old center, but that has not happened for years. The course now runs largely through South and also passes Oost, Duivendrecht and Ouderkerk aan de Amstel.

Organizer Le Champion hoped this year, due to the 50th anniversary of the marathon, to change that. It was intended that the marathon would also pass the Rokin and Dam Square this year, but those plans will be moved on to next year.

Capacity

The fact that this year is not possible to have the marathon run through the center, it is mainly due to security. There are, among other things because of the 750th birthday of Amsterdam and the Return of Sailmany more events than in other years.

“Now we are actually running into the maximum capacity of the municipality and the emergency services,” says competition director René Wit. “That made it impossible to organize a marathon with a new course.”

The organization already started in Coronatijd with coming up with a new course, hoping to make the marathon more attractive in the future. “We already have a good course, we are really satisfied with that, but we want to show more of the city. It would have been nice if that could have been this year, but I don’t see it as a disappointment.”

The intention is that the renewed course will return annually after 2026.
