China reacts to Chinese electric cars imposed by Canada.

As the Beijing Ministry of Commerce announced, tariffs of 100 percent will be collected on Canadian rapeseed oil and peas from March 20. A custom of 25 percent is due on fishing products and pork.

The Chinese measures are a reaction to the punitive tariffs raised by Canada last October to Chinese electric vehicles such as BYD, steel and aluminum. Beijing initially initiated an investigation, the results of which have now been presented.

It was found that Canada had violated the Chinese Foreign Trade Act. Therefore, tariffs are now being levied on certain goods imported from Canada in response, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said.

Canada had justified the tariffs with the argument that Chinese companies achieved artificially lower prices through state subsidies and thus distort the competition. The United States and the EU also went to Chinese exports with tariffs.

If the e-car tariffs were still pulling against China, Canada has been in severe trade disputes with the United States since US President Donald Trump took office. Trump has also enforced additional tariffs of 20 percent on all Chinese imports to the USA.
