The “premier class” is growing: from 2026 a traditional car manufacturer is represented in Formula 1 – not just with its own team.
The entry of an eleventh Formula 1 team has now been officially approved by the International Automobile Association and the racing series. The motorsport king class announced this year’s season a week before the start.
With the Cadillac team, which will then get the engines from Ferrari, two US teams alone will start from 2026. The Haas racing team is already represented. At a later point in time, Cadillac’s parent company General Motors should also build engines for Formula 1.
Formula 1 managing director Stefano Domenicali spoke of an “important and positive” sign for the development of the racing series. Formula 1 had initially rejected a start of Michael Andretti’s actual project from 2026, while the FIA had previously cleared the way. After that, Formula 1, the FIA and General Motors, achieved a fundamental agreement for the start.
In 2014, eleven teams and thus 22 drivers recently competed. The fact that it will be the case again in the coming year is due to the large standard reform, especially in the engine area towards a significant greener Formula 1 with a significant increase in performance of the electric motors and the use of 100 % sustainable fuels. With Audi, which has taken over the clean racing stable, there will also be a second German factory team alongside Mercedes.
