More money for defense and investments
With a view to Germany’s own efforts to strengthen its defense ability and military support from Ukraine, Scholz said that Germany wanted to significantly increase its defense spending and change the Basic Law. In this context, he praised the Union and SPD’s proposals for a debt -financed investment package and higher defense spending in connection with a loosening of the debt brake. “We need exactly what we’re doing now,” said Scholz.
Europe must also be able to further strengthen its security. The member countries should be able to take out loans without violating European fiscal rules. The EU must come to long -term changes in its rules along what Germany is currently discussing. “In any case, I think that is central,” said Scholz.
Scholz rejected joint EU debts in the form of Eurobonds. The German position is known and will not change, said the Chancellor. The important topic on the summit is also the European Armaments be. This must have more freedom to cooperate with each other and make procurement easier, says Scholz. When it comes to trade and US tariffs, Scholz emphasized that Europe was determined and closed.
