Katharina Hennig and Laura Gimmler clearly missed the hoped-for World Cup medal in the cross-country skier team sprint.
The 28 -year -old Hennig and Gimmler, three years older, took sixth place in the race in classical technology in Trondheim in Norwegian. Physical problems and a not optimal material in difficult conditions did not allow a fight for the targeted podium.
“This weather here: This is a lottery,” said Hennig in the “ARD”. “The cards are mixed here every day.” After a strong snowfall the day before, it rained heavily again today.
Jonna Sundling and Maja Dahlqvist came up best. They crowned themselves into world champions. Jessie Diggins and Julia Kern from the USA won silver in front of the Swiss Anja Weber and Nadine Fähndrich.
Hope for the season
The German cross-country team continues to wait for a medal at these Nordic World Ski Championships. The only remaining realistic chance of this is probably the women’s relay on Friday.
The German duo Elias Keck and Jan Stölben ran in tenth in the men’s team sprint. The Norwegian Erik Valnes and Johannes Kläbo secured the title, who cheered his fourth gold in the fourth race of Trondheim.
Hennig fell in qualification
Gimmler had recently fought with health problems from the German women’s team. “I am not there in terms of form where I was three or four weeks ago,” said the Oberstdorfer. “Of course that hurts at a World Cup.”
In qualification, Hennig, who had won Olympic Gold with Victoria Carl 2022 in China, also fell. “I am very annoyed, but I think that would not have been enough for both of us today,” she said.
It didn’t go as desired from the start. Despite constant rain, a group of five settled early. Germany was not one of them. “It will be difficult to close the hole,” said Schlickenrieder. He should be right.
