Berlin (dpa-AFX)-CDU boss Friedrich Merz will bring a special meeting of the still incumbent Bundestag in the coming week in game, in which over a new special fund could be decided. According to participants, Merz said in a meeting of the CDU board in Berlin that this week will decide in the talks with the SPD whether such a special meeting would be in the coming week. First, the “Bild” newspaper had reported on corresponding statements by Merz.

According to the information from participants, Merz did not give a specific date for a special meeting. Merz also did not comment on whether it could be a special fund for defense or infrastructure.

The Greens learned from the media that Merz is probably striving for a special meeting, as its chairman Felix Banaszak said. Instead of launching ideas in this way, Merz and his faction should better approach the Greens and – with a view to the majority relationships in the new Bundestag – also to the Left Party. “Maybe you can lead the CDU with Basta, you can’t rule a country that way,” he criticized. He repeated the position of the Greens, which do not consider a special fund, but a reform of the debt brake for the right way.

A special fund would have to be anchored in the Basic Law so that the debt brake does not have to be applied. However, a two-thirds majority is necessary in the Bundestag that the Union and the SPD alone do not have. In the future Bundestag, which must be constituted by March 25 at the latest, AfD and Left Party have a blocking minority. For this reason, it is discussed at short notice with the majority conditions of the previous parliament./BK/DP/STW
