Handball Bundesliga club THW Kiel confidently came to two points in the race for the German championship on Friday evening. The “zebras” prevailed at the promoted SG BBM Bietigheim with 39:24 (22:11). It was the highest victory this season.

The success for the team of THW trainer Filip Jicha in the table is at least temporarily a level – with 32:10 points from fourth to third place. The leader MT Melsungen (34: 6) is within sight. This would be the case even if the North Hesse should not win at SG Flensburg-Handewitt on Saturday evening.

Melsungen is also the next opponent of the Kiel – but then in the European League. On Tuesday (8:45 p.m.) the “zebras” received the MT for a duel for victory in the main round group III.

THW pulls away through 7-0 run

Almost two weeks after the 25:27 defeat at HSG Wetzlar, the Kieler in Bietigheim made it clear in the first few minutes of the game that they did not want to stumble under the climber under any circumstances. From a 3: 3 (5th) they quickly made a 10: 3 (12th). Everything went too quickly for the Baden-Württembergers. The SG cover was not accessed, and the uncertainty of the hosts was noticeable on the offensive.

After Emil Madsen had met for Kiel for 12: 4 (17th), Bietigheim’s coach Iker Romero already took his second break. The Spaniard, who was a co-coach of TSV Hannover-Burgdorf from 2017 to 2021, read the Levites to his players, demanded a lot more passion and resistance. But even after the clear speech, his team’s offensive performance remained weak.

THW goalkeeper Andreas Wolff came up with a parade rate of 47.6 percent in the first half. However, he has also been challenged by opposing players much more. With the safe guidance in the back, Jicha brought the young forces Linus Kutz and Ben Szilagyi shortly before the break, who then contributed a goal to the 22:11 break lead.

Kiel continues to expand the lead

The whole matter was even clearer six minutes after the restart: Kiel led at the time with 27:13. At the THW, Tomas Mrkva moved between the posts a little later – and the lead continued to grow. Ten minutes before the end of the game there were already 17 goals (37:20). After that, however, the North Germans let it grind a little: the 40-goal mark was no longer cracked. Elias Ellefsen à Skipagötu and Madsen were the best shooters of the guests each with seven goals.
