The favorites from Sweden, Norway and Finland come at the Nordic Ski World Cup. But a Haitian is also there.

“I opened the World Cup, Wow! I will remember that all my life.” Celine Marti was overjoyed to celebrate the special honor that she gave her on Wednesday. The winter athlete from Haiti wore a racing suit with number 1. She proudly told the sports information service (in short: SID): “For me, a dream came true today.”

Marti is part of the Nordic Ski World Cup in Trondheim. It is your second World Cup in the young year. Because two weeks ago she also competed at the Alpine World Cup in Saalbach-Hinterglemm (Austria) and started in the slalom and giant slalom.

In the slalom, she left a mistake in the first round. In the giant slalom she finished, but was more than a minute behind the Italian Federica Brignone, who became world champion. Unlike in Austria, she left the cross -country skiing in Trondheim as 53. After all, half a dozen runners behind. “It was a little easier here. In Saalbach it was pretty steep,” she said, laughing loudly.

Marti’s life story is even more remarkable. “I was found on the street as a baby and it was unclear whether I would survive,” she said. She made it, was adopted at the age of nine months and grew up with a couple in Switzerland. In the meantime, she is a mother herself, her daughter was standing in Trondheim on the edge of the route, hitting her and hugging her after a real interview marathon.

In Switzerland, Marti works as a police officer at the Airport in Geneva, as well as at the volunteer fire brigade. But her passion remains skiing, and there is no end in sight. “I would like to represent Haiti at the Olympic Games next year,” she told the SID. On the slopes or in the trail? “Oh, I actually don’t care,” said Marti, thought briefly and then said: “But when I think about it: cross -country skiing is my priority.”
