Edward Berger is what you call an “actor director”. In ancient Hollywood, George Cukor, Howard Hawks, John Huston and Leo McCarey staged such directors who staged Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart, Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant.
Edward Berger, who triumphed at the Oscars with “Nothing new in the West”, in which he contrasted the material battle of the First World War with the fates of individual soldiers, has fulfilled a few wishes with “Conclave”: the occupation of the Vaticandrama with Ralph Fiennes, Isabella Rossellini, John Lithgow and Stanley Tucci is the dream of everyone Casting director. Anyone who has seen films in the past 40 years knows these outstanding actors, who shone both as a main and as a supporting actor. They are not “stars”.
The Screen Actors Guild has now awarded “Conclave” with the price for the best ensemble performance. It is also the best dressed ensemble.
The film, a paper game, is less convincing and will hardly arrive at the Oscars against “The Brutalist”, “Emilia Perez” and “A Complete Unknown”.
As expected, Demi Moore was honored for “The Substance” at the SAG Awards. She will also win the Oscar. Timothée Chalamet was honored for his spectacular representation of the young Bob Dylan. Adrien Brody in the monumental work “The Brutalist” is less charismatic, but for a very long time in the picture.
There is no doubt about the Oscar for Kieran Culkin. Since “succession” he has been the darling of every award ceremony. He casually took the SAG Award with him.

The fact that the actor union does not forget is noticeable at the price for the ensemble of the “Only Murders in the Building” series: Steve Martin and Martin Short play two grimacifying amateur detectives in the old -fashioned Schwank. In the “Comedy” category, “Murders” won against the “The Bear” series, which otherwise wins everything.
And Martin Short got the price of his life’s work. Very rightly so: who has seen films in the past 40 years …
